Routed Signs

Routed signs typically have a flat background with lettering/graphics cut into it. They may also have raised letters, graphics or moldings on a flat background.

Sandblasted Signs

The background of a sandblasted sign is "blasted" away leaving it wth a woodgrain texture, while the lettering, graphics, and border remain raised.
