Signcrafters of Kitchen Kettle Village

Signcrafters Tour

The Village Signcrafter shop is an artistic blend of old world craftsmanship, modern technology, and high quality materials, such as Redwood, Western Red Cedar, HDU, and 23 kt. Gold Leaf. Our shop is purposely designed so all of our visitors have an "up close and personal" experience with our craftsmen, equipment, and techniques. We love interacting with our customers and answering their questions.

Village Signcrafters is equipped to handle any of your sign needs, form carved, sandblasted, router-cut, vinyl, and 23 kt. gold leaf. We are proud of our craftsmanship and have some photographs to share with you!

Steve measures a new sign

Located inside the Signcrafters Shop at Kitchen Kettle Village, Steve carefully measures his board and begins work on a new sign.

Visitors love to come in and catch a glimpse as the Signcrafters staff create signs right before their eyes.

Steve uses chalk to mark the board

Once the sign is measured and marked, Steve uses chalk to mark the letter placement. With years of experience, letters are evenly spaced and sized for just the right fit.

Steve begins routing out the letters

With a steady hand and a watchful eye, Steve carefully begins using a router to cut away the wood to create the engraved lettering he has already marked.

Steve continues routing out the letters

One wrong move here and Steve will need to start all over.

Signcrafters staff are always concerned with safety. Protective eyewear and earplugs are always worn when working and a dust collection system keeps work areas (and the store) clean.

Computerized router cuts stock signs

While Steve works on custom signs, computerized routers are programmed to create stock signs.

By changing the router bits, signs can be cut with incredible detail, down to the wheels on an Amish buggy.

Routed Signs

Routed signs typically have a flat background with lettering/graphics cut into it. They may also have raised letters, graphics or moldings on a flat background.

Sandblasted Signs

The background of a sandblasted sign is "blasted" away leaving it wth a woodgrain texture, while the lettering, graphics, and border remain raised.
